The Story Behind Popworld Leeds

Popworld Leeds officially opened its doors on 26 May 2017 and quickly became one of the city’s best-known and most popular clubs. From the very start, it has been a go-to spot for those wanting to relive the music of the 90s and early 2000s.

Located on Cookridge Street in the former premises of the Baa Bar, the club underwent an extensive refurbishment ahead of its launch, with over £250,000 invested in the transformation.

As its name suggests, Popworld Leeds focuses on pop-themed nights, offering guests a unique nostalgic experience with hits from the likes of the Spice Girls, S Club 7, Five, Steps, and other iconic artists of the time. The cocktail menu is equally impressive, featuring themed drinks such as Candy Pop, Tin Pop, Flaska, and the signature oversized Partini, which adds extra flair to the parties.

In December 2018, Leeds welcomed its second Popworld, located on Lower Briggate. This club is also hugely popular, hosting themed nights such as Pop is a Drag, PopFix, and Pop Party, along with live performances and a range of entertainment events.

The Party Atmosphere

Popworld Leeds is renowned for its high-energy, vibrant atmosphere. The club opens Thursday to Saturday, from 9:00 pm until 4:00 am.

Its 90s nights are a joyful, dance-filled celebration, featuring music from the 90s and early 2000s. Guests are greeted by a friendly team of bartenders serving an array of bright, themed cocktails that keep the party mood alive.

The playlists often feature the decade’s most beloved hits and remixes—tracks that spark instant nostalgia and fill the dance floor, including Wannabe by the Spice Girls, …Baby One More Time by Britney Spears, Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) by the Backstreet Boys, No Scrubs by TLC, Genie in a Bottle by Christina Aguilera, I Want It That Way by the Backstreet Boys, Livin’ la Vida Loca by Ricky Martin, and Barbie Girl by Aqua.

Themed 90s parties are a frequent highlight, complete with an authentic dress code that embraces the fashion trends of the era:

  • Denim from head to toe: Jackets, waistcoats, and dungarees (often worn with one strap undone)—a true 90s classic.
  • Layered and oversized: Baggy jeans or track bottoms, oversized shirts, and T-shirts bearing logos of favourite 90s bands.
  • Street hip-hop style: Bold branded clothing, colourful trainers (Reebok Pumps, Nike Air Max), bandanas, chunky gold chains.
  • Grunge: Checked shirts, ripped jeans or skirts, fishnet tights, heavy boots, chokers, dark make-up, and intentionally messy hair.
  • Bright neon shades: T-shirts, jackets, leggings, plus accessories like scrunchies, large earrings, and colourful or mirrored sunglasses.

This is the story of Popworld Leeds—a perfect example of how iconic music from the past can be successfully combined with a modern club format, appealing to both young crowds and lifelong pop fans.
