Leeds Arts University boasts a rich and fascinating history dating back to 1846. During this time, the Leeds School of Art was established. Initially, the art school emerged as part of the Leeds Mechanics Institute and Literary Society, founded in 1842. This led to the creation of the Leeds Government School of Design in 1846.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, the institution evolved, and in 1903 it relocated to a building on Vernon Street, which remains its primary campus to this day. Then came the First World War. Understandably, art and music took a backseat, but after the war, the school became a hub for many ex-servicemen, including future prominent artists such as Henry Moore, Raymond Coxon, and Barbara Hepworth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Active Development<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the 1920s, the institution underwent a rebranding, becoming Leeds College of Art, which quickly became one of the leading centers of artistic education in the country. By 1946, 15 graduates had gone on to head other art schools, a testament to the high standard of teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 1950s and 1960s, Leeds College of Art became a hub of innovation in art education. Notably, the college\u2019s Basic Design course, developed in Leeds, became a model for art education and is still reflected in today\u2019s Foundation Diploma programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1968, part of the institution\u2019s activities moved to the newly established Jacob Kramer College. This location became the training ground for notable alumni such as Eric Bainbridge, Marcus Harvey, Clio Barnard, Georgina Starr, and Damien Hirst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2009, the institution underwent another name change, becoming Leeds College of Art. Just eight years later, it was officially granted university status, becoming Leeds Arts University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university continues to expand and innovate. For example, in 2019, it completed a major campus expansion with an investment of \u00a322 million. This renovation introduced modern classrooms, photo studios, fashion workshops, a research library, and even a caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
