The earliest surviving playbill, dated 1781, lists a performance of the comedy “The Disbanded Officer”.

The theatre operated seasonally, hosting performances from May to July, with most productions being comedies or comic operas. During summer, when London theatres closed, prominent actors joined provincial troupes to perform in venues like the Leeds Theatre.

Why Leeds?

Tate Wilkinson chose Leeds for several reasons:

Strategic Location: The city lay halfway between the theatrical hubs of London and Edinburgh, making it an ideal stop for traveling troupes.

Challenges in Newcastle: Wilkinson faced difficulties managing his Newcastle theatre, prompting him to establish a new venue for summer performances.

Despite initial resistance, particularly from local clergy who deemed theatre inappropriate, Wilkinson succeeded in establishing a cultural foothold in Leeds.

Activities at the Hunslet Lane Theatre

The first theatre was a modest brick building measuring 26 by 12 metres. Conditions inside were far from luxurious, with reports of draughts, cold, and dampness. Actress Dorothea Jordan described the venue as gloomy and chilly, allowing wind and rain to seep in.

Nevertheless, the theatre attracted notable figures, including celebrated actress Sarah Siddons, renowned for her tragic roles. Alongside comedies and tragedies, the theatre also featured pantomimes and unique acts, such as Mr. Usher’s trained cats.

Performances typically took place from 6 to 7 p.m., three to four times a week during the summer season.

Decline and Rebirth

The Hunslet Lane Theatre faced several challenges, including its small size, poor condition, and inconvenient location far from the city centre. By 1863, the theatre was sold to actor John Coleman, who undertook its transformation.

In 1867, Coleman rebuilt the venue, renaming it the New Royal Theatre and Opera House. The redesigned building featured modern amenities, including:

A spacious, mosaic-tiled foyer with a large fireplace.

Luxurious interiors designed for comfort and aesthetic appeal.

Over 20 dressing rooms and rest areas for performers.

A well-equipped stage with advanced mechanisms for moving 30-foot-tall scenery.

Coleman’s troupe performed original dramas and introduced new innovations, such as reduced-price tickets for less affluent patrons during the third act. However, this strategy led to complaints.

Despite these efforts, the theatre’s fate was sealed by a devastating fire on 28 May 1875, which destroyed the building entirely.

The Hunslet Lane Theatre marked the beginning of Leeds’ rich theatrical tradition. It paved the way for future cultural institutions, drawing renowned performers to the city and offering residents access to high-quality performances.

This theatre’s story highlights the evolution of British society in the 18th and 19th centuries, serving as a foundation for the thriving theatrical culture that Leeds enjoys today.

The first theatre in Leeds, built in 1771, was located on Hunslet Lane and was the brainchild of British actor and manager Tate Wilkinson.
