Brian Mosley was born in 1931 in Leeds. His mother worked in a printing press, and his father was employed at a dye factory. He attended Leeds Central High School, where he first stepped onto the stage at the age of 10, playing the hind legs of a cow in a pantomime production of “Cinderella.”
As a teenager, Mosley worked as a clothing catalog model and aspired to become a missionary. At 13, he earned a scholarship to the Leeds College of Art, beginning his studies there in 1944. Later, he worked as a commercial artist, a bookseller, and a drama teacher.
Tragically, his father died of a heart attack in 1950, which strained his relationship with his mother, particularly after her remarriage.
Early Acting Career
After serving in the Royal Air Force, Mosley pursued his passion for acting, training at the Bradford Civic Theatre and the Northern Theatre School under Esme Church.
He began his acting career with the New Pilgrim Players, performing in unconventional venues such as churches, abbeys, pubs, and even prisons. He later worked in repertory theatres across York, Perth, Derby, and Harrogate.
In 1961, Mosley joined the cast of the iconic British soap opera “Coronation Street”, where he played Alfred “Alf” Roberts, a post office employee. This role became his most notable, spanning decades and endearing him to audiences.
In 1997, Mosley suffered a heart attack, which limited his ability to continue acting at the same pace. His character in “Coronation Street” was written out, and Mosley filmed his final scene, depicting Alf’s death, on 4 December 1998. He passed away six months later, also from a heart attack.
