The Creation of Leeds Grand Theatre
The Grand Theatre was designed by James Robinson Watson and opened its doors to the public on 18 November 1878. The building originally comprised three sections: the theatre itself, function rooms, and shops. Constructed in the High Victorian Gothic style using red brick and stone accents, the theatre is a Grade II listed building, recognised for its architectural significance.
In 1907, some of the theatre’s spaces were converted into a cinema named Assembly Rooms, later rebranded as Plaza. The cinema ceased operations in 1985, and its hall was repurposed as a rehearsal space.
The Leeds City Council purchased the Grand Theatre in 1970, and by 1978, it became the home of Opera North. Over the years, the theatre hosted plays, musicals, pantomimes, and revues.
A major renovation in 2005 required the theatre to close temporarily. After a £31.5 million refurbishment, it reopened in 2006, offering enhanced facilities and welcoming new productions such as “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Dirty Dancing”, “Shrek the Musical”, “Oliver!”, “We Will Rock You”, and “Wicked”.
In 2019, the Grand Theatre hosted the world premiere of Kay Mellor’s play “Band of Gold”. Although the COVID-19 pandemic forced its closure in 2020, the theatre reopened in 2021, continuing its tradition of captivating performances.
Opera North: A Theatre Within the Theatre
Since 1978, the Grand Theatre has been home to Opera North, though the company also performs in other cities. Founded in 1977 as the English National Opera North, its mission was to bring opera to northern England.
The company’s first production in Leeds was Saint-Saëns’ “Samson and Delilah” in 1978, under the musical direction of David Lloyd-Jones. Later, Paul Daniel succeeded him as musical director.
Opera North’s repertoire includes an array of world premieres, such as:
